Devastating Floods in Karenni State
Myanmar is suffering severe flooding after being hit by Typhoon Yagi. Asia’s most powerful storm this year the Typhoon already swept Vietnam and the Philippines before hitting Myanmar on 9 September.
People in Karenni State are particularly badly affected due to the high number of people displaced because of the three-year civil war. Continuous rain for over a week has caused widespread flooding.
Over total of 28,000 people in the Karenni community have been affected by the floods, including almost 6,000 people living in 12 IDP camps.
At least 24 deaths have been reported in Karenni since the severe flooding began.
There is an urgent need for shelter, food and medicine.
Local groups have taken the lead in the emergency response and are overseeing the resettlement and rescue operation and desperately need support to make further progress.
Karenni Community UK is providing financial aid to teams working to support victims of the flooding.
