Greenland
Under military rule natural resources in Myanmar have been over-exploited, leading to drastic impacts on the environment. Myanmar, famed for its teak, has been reported to have the third-highest rate of deforestation in the world after Brazil and Indonesia.
In 2016, during a period of semi-democratic government, restrictions on logging were put in place including a year long export ban. However since the military coup in 2021 the rate of deforestation has increased to fund the military, with a large rise in illegal logging.
As well as loss of biodiversity and carbon impact, deforestation has worsened the effects of natural disasters. Myanmar is very susceptible to disasters including droughts, cyclones and flooding, such as the devastating flooding that hit Karenni State in September 2024.
Karenni State has been persistently exploited for its natural resources, including timber and hydroelectric power. From 2001 to 2023, the state lost 80.4 kha of tree cover, equivalent to a 9.1% decrease in tree cover since 2000, and 45.2 Mt of COâ‚‚ emissions.
The Greenland Project
We established The Greenland Project in 2023 working alongside community leads in Karenni State. The project is dedicated to empowering local communities to protect their local environment. Planting trees and fostering a sustainable and greener future.
By engaging residents in tree-planting initiatives and environmental education, we support long term inititives to:
- Restore natural habitats and enhancing biodiversity
- Combat climate change by offsetting carbon emissions
- Enhancing the natural landscape
- Providing natural resilience to natural disasters such as landslides.

With the help of our doners we were able to plant over 11,000 trees in 2023
