Catastrophic earthquake hits Myanmar

On Friday 28 March  Myanmar was struck by a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake levelling  buildings, roads, hospitals, bridges and other infrastructure.

The quake was shallow, at a depth of just 10km with the epicentre near the central city of Mandalay which has suffered extensive damaged.

Buildings, power and communication lines have been severely damaged across much of the country.

Thousands are thought to have died in the earthquake with millions more affected by the devastation.

In Karenni State major landslides have blocked off major rivers.

Our workers on the ground report tremors for over half an hour as people panicked and sought shelter.

This earthquake comes amid ongoing civil war in the country. The military’s war against its people, causing the displacement of more than three million people, leaves the country, the people and the infrastructure poorly prepared and extremely vulnerable to natural disasters.
